Houston man sent to prison for depositing another person’s COVID-19 stimulus check in his account

HOUSTON – A 50-year-old man was sentenced to prison time today after being found guilty of committing fraud in connection to COVID-19 stimulus checks.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Texas, Ndem Oduu, admitted to depositing another person’s stimulus check in his own account, defrauding them of $1,200 that was meant to help the victim weather economic difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, Oduu was found guilty of trying to defraud the government through other avenues. In fact, evidence heard during his court hearing included “thousands of pages” within Oduu’s apartment that laid out his plan to commit fraud via loans and tax credits.

After his trial, U.S. District Judge Charles R. Eskridge sentenced Oduu to 45 months in federal prison, along with ordering him to pay $1,867 in restitution fees.

After completing his sentence, Oduu will serve three years of supervised release.

At the time of this article, the 50-year-old is currently in custody and will be transferred to a federal facility in the near future.
