TRACKING THE TROPICS: Wave in the Atlantic headed toward the Caribbean could become first hurricane of the year

No description found

It is hot and humid in Houston Thursday and that trend will continue into next week.

There is some activity in the tropics that needs to be mentioned, including a wave which could become the first hurricane of the year in the Atlantic.

Lets take a look at what is out there.

Caribbean disturbance

An area of low pressure in the Caribbean is producing widespread showers and thunderstorms. It is fairly disorganized though and only has a low chance, 30% over the next seven days, of developing into an organized system.

It is combatting lots of dry air and has a lot of land in front of it. We will watch and see what happens with it as it heads toward the Bay of Campeche.

Atlantic system

Of greater concern is a tropical wave located out in the Atlantic Ocean. Conditions appear much more conducive for this system to develop and a tropical depression or storm could form by this weekend.

This system could become the first hurricane of the 2024 season. It is headed toward the Caribbean Sea, but will take at least a week before it gets there.

Past that, it is too soon to tell where exactly it will go. It could potentially go into the Gulf of Mexico and would definitely need to be watched just in case it tries to make a run toward Texas.

Some long-range models try to take this next system on a similar path to what Alberto had. Being this far out, this model should be taken with a grain of salt, but it is definitely worth mentioning as this is a possibility.

We will be watching the conditions and track of this system to see what ends up happening.
