Humble woman sleeps in car for week waiting for power to be restored following Beryl

HUMBLE, Texas – In the Classic Pines neighborhood in Humble, many residents are still without power, one week after Beryl hit the Greater Houston area.

Christina Bourgeois told KPRC 2 Reporter Corley Peel she and her dog, Mimosa, have been using her car as their second home.

“We climb in, we get in the vehicle, we lay down and we got to sleep. We try. We turn on the A.C. on every two or three hours or so. I can’t run my car all night. My gaslight is on right now. I have no money to put gas in the car right now. It’s over for me,” said Bourgeois.

Bourgeois said her two young children are having to stay with their grandparent, while she stays behind to keep an eye on their home.

“I work from home. This is my livelihood. I have not been able to work,” said Bourgeois.

The inside of her house, feels like an oven.

Bourgeois said she reached out to CenterPoint several times.

“Yesterday I reached out to them. They told me that 442 people were affected by this local outage,” she said.

On CenterPoint’s outage map, Bourgeois’ neighborhood is showing its energized with potential local outages. CenterPoint said the reason they still don’t have power is because there is likely a circuit level outage, which typically impacts more than 100 customers. CenterPoint said if you see street lights, grocery stores or surrounding neighborhoods without power, the problem is likely circuit level.

By Monday afternoon, electric crews were seen in Bourgeois’ neighborhood. She is hoping, that is a good sign.

“I’m very desperate at this point. Please turn the power on. Just turn it on, please. I miss my kids. I miss being at home,” said Bourgeois.
