EXCLUSIVE: Mayor Whitmire explains why he has not yet endorsed Kamala Harris for president

HOUSTON – During an interview on KPRC 2+ Now, Houston Mayor John Whitmire was asked whether he had plans to endorse Kamala Harris for president.

While noting to our Zach Lashway, how he looks forward to Harris’ visit to Houston this week, the mayor touted her experience as a public servant.

“I am very excited about Kamala [Harris] the vice president - let me just say, I look forward to talking to her about the challenges major cities face,” Mayor Whitmire said. “And, together, we can solve these problems. She’s been a local official, so she knows the challenges. And, you know, I look forward to meeting her.”

The mayor said while he doesn’t have an exact timeline of when he will endorse her. He did explain why he hasn’t endorsed Harris formally just yet.

“I haven’t endorsed her yet because I take my endorsement so seriously - she hasn’t gotten the nomination yet - but you know, as a Democrat, I always support the Democratic nominee,” he continued. “And if the nation chooses, she’s the president. So we’re going to work together...I’m excited and looking forward to establishing rapport with her; I hope she gives me her cell number. I’ll certainly give her my cell number and before you know it, we’re going to be on the same team.”
