Mullet Champs, the annual contest celebrating the bold and outrageous mullet hairstyle, has contestants from across the country vying for the title of best mullet in categories like Femullet, Men’s Mullet, Kids, Teens, and 55+.

This competition is about more than just hair. Contestants like Easton Dean and Donovan Benesch are raising money for a worthy cause—Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors (JAH4WW). Created by former NFL All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen, JAH4WW is dedicated to providing accessible, mortgage-free, injury-specific homes to Veterans wounded in combat.

This year, Easton is one of the standout contestants, showcasing his unique mullet and hoping to take home the championship. Easton, who goes by “Mullet Maniac,” shared the story of how he came to have his mullet.

“I wanted a new haircut, so when we were heading to Florida for a family trip, I decided to get this cool mohawk-mullet combo called a ‘thoroughbred,’” Easton explained. “Ever since then, I’ve just let it grow.”

His mullet quickly became a hit at school. “When he went back to school, his art teacher mentioned a mullet contest, and we decided to enter this year,” said Easton’s mom Heather. “His hair has gotten super long, and it’s definitely attracting attention.”

Easton often receives comments on his hairstyle. “A lot of people ask if they can braid it,” he said. “Even at baseball games, some of the players have commented on it when he’s gotten signatures.”

Unfortunately, Easton will soon have to cut his mullet due to school regulations.

“He’s attending a private school for middle school, and their hair requirements mean he has to cut it,” said Heather. “So, this is our last big push to get it recognized before he has to cut it.”

Despite this setback, Easton has already made it to the next round of the competition.

“We found out he advanced to the next round, and voting starts today until the 30th,” Heather shared. “The top 25 out of 100 will go on to the final round.”

As Easton continues to compete, he encourages everyone to vote for him and support his journey in the Mullet Champs competition.

In the world of unique hairstyles, the mullet is making a comeback, and Donovan, a young hockey player, has embraced it with gusto. He told KPRC 2 how his journey with the iconic hairstyle began.

“One day, I started playing hockey, and I asked my dad if I could learn to skate. After getting better at ice skating, I joined hockey. During the season, my dad asked if I wanted a mullet. Initially, I said no, but a couple of months later, I asked if I could get one, and that’s what started it,” he said.

For Donovan, his mullet isn’t just a hairstyle; it’s a statement. He even named it “Pet Locks.”

Explaining the name, Donovan said, “I was going to name it ‘The Main Attraction,’ but that would have been copyrighted, so we settled on ‘Pet Locks’ because locks mean hair, and it’s kind of like my pet.”

When asked if he would recommend the mullet to others, Donovan shared, “I would suggest it for teenagers and boys, but maybe not for everyone else.”

He noted that while he doesn’t get many compliments from kids his age, older people often appreciate his bold look. “One time, a waitress at a Tex-Mex place told me, ‘Nice haircut,’ and joked about getting one herself. That was surprising,” he said.

Donovan is eagerly waiting to find out if he made it to the next round. “We were supposed to find out yesterday, but they didn’t post the results. Hopefully, I’ll know by Thursday,” he shared.
