HOUSTON – Multiple homes were evacuated for precautionary measures after an underground cistern collapsed, causing a large sinkhole in west Houston Saturday morning.

The incident occurred in the 400 block of Sutherland Terrace Place around 8:30 a.m., according to Captain Beau Moreno of the Houston Fire Department.

Officials say this happened because of the rain. Originally, HFD said the call came in as an unknown rescue with multiple people trapped.

Earlier Saturday, four townhomes were evacuated. Later in the day, officials said they had to evacuate four more as a precaution.

Moreno says it is possible that they will have to evacuate more homes after engineers survey the area.

Additionally, officials say that both CenterPoint and Public Works have been notified.

KPRC 2 crews are headed to the scene and will provide an update shortly.
