HOUSTON, Texas – Greenspoint Mall opened in August of 1976 to great fanfare.
By the late 80s, the mall had expanded, and with the big footprint and all of the big names in retail, found a home at Greenspoint Mall on Houston’s northside.
But the end of the line is near.
The few remaining tenants, jewelers and clothing stores, are working without air conditioning.
That small group of hearty retailers have been alerted that the mall officially closed on June 30, and the very last day to move out or lose access to inventory is July 31.
New Life for Greenspoint
The dilapidated mall has no concrete plans moving forward, and leveling the massive structure will take considerable investment.
In the meantime, modern retailers are moving in just across the street, to an open-air style shopping area called CityNorth.
CityNorth houses bustling lunch spots and smaller retail shops but has room for expansion.
Private security could be seen patrolling CityNorth, which is trying to provide a welcoming atmosphere to shoppers and diners.
New housing is also planned for Greenspoint, which will be located on the southeast corner of the mall.
The housing complex was built in cooperation with the City of Houston and was partially funded by Hurricane Harvey recovery money.
Summit at Rennaissance Park promises to offer a new, modern affordable housing choice for northside Houstonians. Rent rates are based on income.
The bottom floor of the housing project is also reserved for retail.
