FORT BEND COUNTY – Elections are several weeks away and if you’re planning to vote in November -- you don’t want to be surprised at the polls to find that your name is on the suspended list.

How did this happen?

There are two ways to get on the suspended list and it’s usually due to an address issue, such as someone moving or doesn’t update their address.

1. Every two years, the county sends out new voter registration certificates. If the post office returns a certificate due to a wrong address, that voter is added to the list. The county sends out new certificates in January, so if you live in the county and didn’t get one, you need to check and may sure you are registered.

2. Once a year, the county does a data-base comparison with National Change of Address. If someone is registered in another county or state, they are added to the suspended list in Fort Bend County.

The person’s name will stay on the suspended for two federal elections then purged. Voters have until Oct. 7 to update their info before the November election.

How to update your name and address

You may update your name and/or address online if you still live in the county in which you are currently registered to vote. If you have moved to a new county, it is necessary to re-register using the printed Voter Registration Application.

Online name and/or address changes must be submitted by the 30th day before any election in which you desire to vote. Click the link here to submit your online name and/or address change (this service provided by the Texas Secretary of State and Texas.gov).
