HOUSTON – After a woman was attacked while jogging at Memorial Park, KPRC 2 is looking for ways to help other runners stay safe by providing tips on how to protect themselves while out there.

The incident happened around 5 a.m. last Saturday.

Police say the woman was jogging on a trail in the park when she was confronted by a man in his 20s who accused her of running over his brother with a vehicle.

The man then attacked her, hitting her and dragging her off the trail.

The woman told police she didn’t know the man. She is still in the hospital, and police are still searching for the suspect.

KPRC 2′s Re’Cehelle Turner spent Friday morning speaking to Coach Chris Stacy with the Runner’s High Club.

Stacy provided safety tips for runners and joggers.

“Well, rule number one, don’t wear headphones before the sun comes up. If you can’t hear anything, it’s a problem. Rule number two, be very careful if you’re running along Memorial. And rule number three, try to run with a group or at least a buddy,” he said.

Stacy says safety is the major reason why they started the Runner’s High Club while also looking for peers who want to have fun.

He added that they also recommend wearing bright-colored clothing.

“That’s always a good idea, a very good idea, particularly for runners that, you know, if they’re running in an area that might have a problem. Like if you’re on the bayou and you go in an underpass, it’s very helpful to have things like that,” Stacy said.

Self-defense could also help if someone tried to attack you.
