‘The James Bond of plastic recycling’ uncovered where your plastic is REALLY going

Father warns parents after someone places AirTag tracking device in son's backpack

Wright Waste Management in northwest Houston is under fire for reportedly failing to recycle your plastics.

Brandy Deason works with the non-profit Air Alliance Houston as the Climate Justice Coordinator for Plastic Pollution. The organization works to improve our city’s air quality, especially in underserved areas.

Deason is committed to recycling but began to wonder if her plastics ended up where they should be. Inspired by a woman with a different non-profit, Deason slipped several Apple AirTags into her recycling to track it down.

Her plastic ended up at Wright Waste Management and joined several open-air piles stacked as tall as 10 feet high.

I wouldn’t say I was surprised, but I was definitely disappointed,” Deason said.

When she reached out to Mark Wilfalk, Houston’s Director of Solid Waste Management, he admitted it was a problem and that he would investigate.

Wright Waste Management has also been scrutinized for failing a series of fire inspections, making the stacks of plastic a huge fire hazard.

“I’m horrified honestly, for the people that live near it. We’re hoping, though, that we can maybe discuss this with the mayor’s office at some point,” Deason said.

Ben Tracy with CBS News applauded Deason’s efforts, dubbing her ‘the James Bond of plastic recycling.’

“That’s my new nickname now,” Deason said with a laugh. “I thought it was really sweet.”

We reached out to Wright Waste Management for comment but have not heard back yet.
