False active shooter alarm causes panic at BakerRipley House Campus in Houston’s East End

HOUSTON, Texas – Several parents were sent into panic mode when they received an active shooter message from the BakerRipley House Campus in east downtown Houston Wednesday afternoon.

Houston Police Department Lt. Larry Crowson said although there is no shooting, an active shooting alarm was accidentally set off at the campus located at 4410 Navigation, which activated automatic texts to go out to parents about an active shooting situation.

Lt. Crowson said parents immediately began to storm the campus, which caused a huge “mess” in the area.

KPRC2′s Re’Chelle Turner spoke to one parent who rushed to the school.

“I mean, anything can happen, you know? It’s like, like, you said, you said Uvalde, you know? And you just gotta, you got to think about that, you know? And anything can happen, you know? Were you scared? I mean, yeah, the thought of that didn’t cross my mind. And, you know, you do get a little scared, you know,” the parent said.

Turner also spoke to Sucre Woodley who serves as the Sr. Communications Director. She says no one was hurt.

“There were some parents on campus as they began to line up for dismissal, and we did send out a communication to the parents letting them know that at the moment the school was on lockdown as we worked our normal emergency response plan, which we were doing out of an abundance of caution because, you know, of course, we thought it could have been a false alarm, but we absolutely took full precautionary measures,” she said.

It’s not clear who or what triggered the alarm, but Lt. Crowson assured parents there was no active shooter on the campus or shooting that took place.
