Witnesses testify before grand jury in Sarah Hartsfield murder case

HOUSTON – The Chambers County murder case involving Sarah Hartsfield does not appear to be going to trial this year as attorneys appeared in court Wednesday.

Hartsfield’s new defense attorney Case Darwin asked the judge for specific items to be shared by the state as he continues processing the thousands of pages of evidence.

Hartsfield, who has been married five times, was the only person with her 46-year-old husband Joseph Hartsfield when he became unresponsive at their Beach City home in January 2023. The diabetic was rushed to the hospital where he died a week later, which the medical examiner’s office ruled due to complications of toxic effects of insulin. A grand jury later indicted her for murder.

In a new court document filed this week, Darwin asked the judge to make prosecutors disclose various pieces of evidence related to the case, including medical records, emails, bank statements, screenshots from a phone, police reports, and other specific documents that the defense believes are necessary for their case.
