HOUSTON – The Houston Fire Department said a woman was pronounced dead after being pulled from an apartment that firefighters responded to in Houston’s Third Ward Sunday.

According to James Pennington, Deputy Chief with the Houston Fire Department, firefighters got the call at 11:56 a.m. from an apartment at 3200 Truxillo Street.

Firefighters arrived in about four minutes. When they got there, they didn’t see any fire or smoke showing from the outside of the building, so they entered inside and began investigating.

When they entered the apartment, they noticed some soot and smoke and also found a woman on the first floor. She was pulled out of the apartment and taken to an ambulance where she was pronounced dead.

Pennington said there was no one else in the apartment and the smoke detectors were working and going off. He said the fire was also already out by the time firefighters arrived.

“They used no hoses or anything, the fire just went out on its own,” he said.

Arson units, HPD’s Homicide Division and Crime Scene units are investigating. The cause of the fire is also under investigation and is unknown at this time.
