Federal agencies conducting investigation connected to Houston Housing Authority

HOUSTON – Multiple sources confirm an investigation connected to the Houston Housing Authority is underway in Houston’s East End Tuesday.

The agencies are on the scene at 800 Middle Street in Houston’s Second Ward.

The investigation is being led by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office assisting. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Office of Inspector General is also at the scene.

Details on the investigation are limited at this time, but sources say it has to do with soil in the area and whether it was contaminated or cleaned properly, as the location used to be the site of an incinerator. New low-income housing now sits on the same site.

The agencies are questioning people in the area. The investigation is focused on individuals involved with HHA from the previous administration of Sylvester Turner.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire spoke to KPRC 2 about the situation.

“I want transparency. I replaced the board because I was concerned. I certainly welcome the review process that HUD and the Inspector General are conducting,” he said.

HUD also released a statement confirming the investigation:

We can confirm that HUD Office of Inspector General is conducting a law enforcement operation but have no further details to provide at this time.

KPRC 2 will update you with any new information we receive.
