The Chicano Squad, Houston’s first all-Hispanic task force, was formed after the 1978 Moody Park riot in the city’s East End. Created to bridge trust and overcome language barriers between the Hispanic community and law enforcement, the squad played a crucial role in solving violent crimes, including homicides.
As word of the Chicano Squad spread, a help line was set up and lead to a flood of tips from the community. One squad member tells us people even used the help line for unexpected inquiries, such as help with their water bills. Over time, as more Spanish-speaking officers joined the Houston Police force, the need for the Chicano Squad diminished, but their legacy remains.
