Get 2 Know: Joy Addison, KPRC 2′s newest reporter

HOUSTON – There’s a new addition to the KPRC 2 family.

Our newest reporter, Joy Addison, sat down on Houston Life to talk about her background and her journey in television news.

Joy is a native of Brandon, Mississippi, near the City of Jackson.

“I come from a really big family in Mississippi, we are originally from the Mississippi Delta,” she said.

She graduated from Ole Miss in 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in both broadcast journalism and psychology. She also holds a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology.

Before joining KPRC 2, she spent three years as a Fox News multimedia reporter based in Houston, traveling the country to report breaking news.

She says her interest in broadcast journalism came about during her time doing pageants while she was at Ole Miss. Specifically, doing interviews about a cause she worked for during her time doing those pageants.

“I would do a lot of interviews on my impact, we had like missions, impact missions while we competed and mine was called Operation SOS, Save our Servicemen, it was inspired by my dad who came back from Iraq with PTSD so it helped to connect servicemen to PTSD resources and they would have me occasionally on the news station in Jackson,” she said.

The more time she spent in the newsroom, the more she says she fell in love with it.

One topic of interest for her that she is interested in looking into here in Houston is how the city tackles aging infrastructure, particularly related to water infrastructure. Its a topic she says hearkens back to her time in the Jackson, Mississippi area.

“I covered a story where their water system had completely collapsed and we realized that people in the City of Jackson had been without clean drinking water for over 20 years and so when we dive deeper, we had some engineers who told us its a very common problem,” she said.

She is interested to see how larger cities, such as Houston, are tackling this kind of problem.

Outside of news and work, Joy loves to spend time in the gym and is also a big foodie so you may see her out and about at an area restaurant.
