A recent report by WalletHub looked at data to shed light on states where people experienced the most financial trouble.
Researchers looked at average credit scores, the number of bankruptcy filings between September 2023 compared to 2024, and the share of people with distressed accounts.
All that information led WalletHub to rank Texas as the most financially distressed state in the U.S. Considering the whirlwind of natural disasters Houston residents have experienced, coupled with ongoing inflation, these results shouldn’t be a surprise.

The Lone Star State was also reported to have one of the highest numbers of bankruptcy filings compared to 2023 and search interest index for loans. Alaska, meanwhile had the least financial stress.
