Public reacts after awkward Miss Universe crowning

It may have been one of the most awkward moments on live television.

Miss Universe 2015 host Steve Harvey incorrectly named Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, the winner on Sunday night when she was the first runner-up. Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, was the winner.

"OK, folks. I have to apologize," Harvey said. "Let me just take control of this. This is exactly what's on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card."

Reaction on social media exploded. Some empathized with Harvey, while others found humor in it. Twitter user Rude Comedian shared a meme of Harvey that said, "Happy Friday! Wait, sorry, it's Monday." Another user tweeted, "I want to give Steve Harvey a hug."

It didn't take long for Harvey to respond after the gaffe. After the show, Harvey tweeted an apology:

"I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel horrible. Secondly, I'd like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again, it was an honest mistake. I don't want to take away from this amazing night and pageant. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing."

A statement from Miss Universe was shared on its Facebook page:

"The excitement of live TV was evident tonight on The Miss Universe stage with over 10 million live fan votes tabulated. Unfortunately, a live telecast means that human error can come into play. We witnessed that tonight when the wrong winner was initially announced. Our sincerest apologies to Miss Universe Colombia, Miss Universe Philippines, their families and fans. We congratulate Miss Universe Philippines as Miss Universe 2015."

Donald Trump chimed in on social media Monday morning tweeting: "Very sad what happened last night at the Miss Universe Pageant. I sold it 6 months ago for a record price. This would never have happened."

The Miss Universe Facebook page shared videos of the backstage reactions of both Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines.

"Everything happens for a reason, so I'm happy," Gutierrez said.

"It's a very non-traditional crowning moment. It's very, very 2015." Wurtzbach said.
