HOUSTON – Leaders of the Federal Reserve were in Houston to unveil the new $100 bill, which went into circulation on Tuesday.
The unveiling took place at the Federal Reserve Bank branch in Houston on Allen Parkway at 11 a.m.
Officials said the bill is the most advanced U.S. currency ever produced.
The new security features include a blue 3D security ribbon that runs down the center of the bill. If someone holding the bill were to tilt it in any direction, they would see a sequence of evenly spaced, dark blue 100's running along the light blue strip. Another new feature is a color-shifting liberty bell design on the front side of the bill.
The Federal Reserve originally had planned to release the new bill back in 2011. The new security measures, however, caused the $100 bills to crease during the printing process. The crease left blank spaces on the bills, rendering them unusable.
