GALVESTON ISLAND, Texas – Beginning Friday, the price of parking at some of Galveston's beach parks will increase, Galveston Park Board officials said.

The prices will vary depending on the season and day of the week.

"This is the first time we've increased the cost for parking at Galveston's beach parks since 2004," Park Board Executive Director Kelly de Schaun said. "Raising the parking fees will bring us closer to making much-needed improvements to the parks and it will allow us to contribute more to the beach nourishment fund."

The park board said it approved master plans last year for Stewart Beach and East Beach that call for more than $40 million in upgrades and new facilities, which include adding shade structures, boardwalks, landscaping and other amenities.

"The beach parks are already a popular alternative to other beach areas on the island because they offer special amenities to visitors, such as pavilions, showers, restrooms, concessions, free weekend concerts and more," de Schaun said. "Our vision, however, is to make Galveston more of a regional and national destination, which will require improved services and amenities."

The new pricing plan will raise the current $8 per day parking fee at East Beach, Stewart Beach, West End Pocket Parks 1 and 2 and Dellanera RV Park. Officials said daily parking at these parks will increase to $12 per day on weekdays and $15 per day on weekends throughout peak season.

After Labor Day, fees will be $10 on weekdays and $12 on weekends. Officials said the fees will remain that way during the months the parks are open until peak season begins again Memorial Day weekend.

On holidays and during special events, the cost to park will be $15, officials said.

Anyone who arrives at the parks before noon any day during peak season will receive a $2 early bird discount. Officials said annual passes are available for the beach parks for $50. Seawall parking prices will not be impacted.

Officials said access to all of Galveston's beaches is free for visitors not needing to park. Parking fees are charged at six access points along the Galveston coast while the additional 35 access points remain free of parking charges.
