HOUSTON – About 140 students passed out fliers Wednesday, offering a reward for information about a dog that was recently found mutilated near their school.
A few weeks ago a volunteer with non-profit Barrio Dogs found the dog, named "Hotch", near the Yes Prep East End campus.
"Our initial instinct was dog fighting, but when we took him into the vet he told us that a human chopped his ears off with a knife and stabbed the top of his head," said Gloria Zenteno of Barrio Dogs.
Hotch had to have surgery and spent a few days in the hospital.
Thursday morning, Zenteno teamed up with the students, walking through the neighborhood surrounding their school, to pass out reward fliers and pamphlets about pet safety.
"Dogs aren't able to speak for themselves and so we need people to spread the word," said Mia Dominguez, a sixth-grade student.
Hotch is now in great shape and waiting for a foster home.
Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $5,000 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest in this case. Call 713-222-TIPS (8477).
