SUGAR LAND, Texas – Over the years, the city of Sugar Land has received many accolades, like being named best place to live by Money Magazine. It was also named as the best place to raise a family. Now it can add one more to the list – it's one of the safest cities in America.
Sugar Land has more than 80,000 residents. The city didn't have one murder in 2012. It's now considered No. 20 in the safest cities in the United States, according to Congressional Quarterly.
"We're extremely excited and very proud," Assistant Police Chief Scott Schultz said.
Schultz credited the department working well with the community, along with using the latest technology to solve cases.
"From video cameras to license plate recognition systems, it all plays a big part in helping keep the community safe," said Schultz.
Not far away, the slightly bigger city of Pearland also made the safe city list at No. 48.
But it's bad news for the fourth largest city in the country. Houston is ranked 10th when it came to highest crime rate in the U.S.
Based on the city of Houston crime statistics, last year there were 217 murders, more than 9,000 robberies and more than 26,000 burglaries.
Sugar Land is not immune to crime, but there are days when no crimes are reported.
"We can't stop everything, but we are very proud of our designation," said Schultz.
Other Texas cities on the list include Frisco, Round Rock and League City.
