Newsmakers for Jan. 8: Super Bowl Live, District K progress and celebrating MLK Day

HOUSTON – Super Bowl 51 will be here before you know it! While only a relatively few thousand will have tickets to the game, hundreds of thousands more are expected in Houston during Super Bowl week.

There will be a lot to do, and Super Bowl Live! Vice President Todd Holloway says Super Bowl Live is a perfect and free venue for 10 Days during Super Bowl week. “You can come down and walk through Super Bowl Live, enjoy anything we have going on, and then with the paid ticket you can then go into NFL Experience,” he said.

Also

“TRAFFIC.” That one word makes many Houstonians cringe, but imagine what it will be like during Super Bowl 51.

Kyle Chank dreams about that scenario and, as director of transportation and operations for the Super Bowl Host Committee, says trips into downtown can be a lot smoother if you incorporate the “Know Before You Go” philosophy.

“Plan ahead,” Chank said. “Do some clock management and understand that there will be extra traffic but then give you options. There’s public transportation. We have a great partnership with METRO. There’s parking options. We launched a pre-paid parking app that lets you purchase your parking in advance and know exactly where you’re going to park.”

Houston City Council Member Larry Green represents District K, where the game will be played and said a combination of public and private money was cobbled together to make improvements in time for the Super Bowl activities.

“We knew we had to put on a great face for the world, because the world will be watching,” Green said.
