HOUSTON – After 26 years in the Texas State Senate, Rodney Ellis (D) 13th District, will give up his senate seat to serve as Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner.
Ellis was among several Democrats who were in the running and was selected by the Harris County Democratic Party precinct chairs. Ellis beat interim commissioner Gene Locke by a margin 78 to 36 votes cast by the Democratic party precinct chairs convening last week. An opening became available after the January death of Commissioner El Franco Lee from a heart attack after serving more than 30 years in that position.

Ellis said his choice to step down from the Senate was in part because of the partisan fighting that makes it difficult to govern effectively. He said, the commissioners’ job will allow him to be much more effective in helping the people he serves more quickly and efficiently.
