MERRY CHRISTMAS! The Christmas Tree Cluster - located in the constellation Monoceros about 2,600 light years from Earth this object is a massive collection of hydrogen, dust and various interstellar gases that given time and pressure form new stars. The bluish area in the center of the image is created by the massive glow of stars illuminating stellar dust. This image was taken by me last year and reprocessed this weekend. The telescope was a TEC 140mm f/7 refractor mounted on a Paramount MX+ mount. SBIG STT-8300M Camera, Astrodon Gen II filters. The image is a composition of 90 minutes through Red, Green and Blue filters, 4 hours through an Luminance filter and 2 hours through a Hydrogen Alpha filter for a total exposure of 10. 5 hours.
