Ahead of holidays, Texans D.J. Reader uses off day to give back around Houston

HOUSTON – As usual, the Texans had Tuesday off, but workouts resume Wednesday to prepare for Monday night’s prime-time game against a division opponent -- the Tennessee Titans.

On Tuesday, nose tackle D.J. Reader used his time away from the stadium to hit the streets of Houston to give back.

Reader, joined by his teammate, defensive end Carlos Watkins, teamed up with Brothers Produce to pass out fresh food to homeless people in downtown.

Former NBA star Ricky Davis and his foundation were also part of the day of giving.

Reader said it’s not only about donating items or money, but it’s also about spending time with the people of the city he now calls home.

“My dad told me there is no substitute for hard work. No matter how much money you have. To get out here and put that elbow grease and that work in and get that genuine conversation and somebody seeing you out there doing stuff with them. That’s what it’s all about,” he said.
