At the end of January, Aldine ISD's best swimmers took to the pool to try and punch their tickets to the Region IV Championships at the District 15-6A Championships. When the scores were all compiled MacArthur women's swimming team took second place overall, led by Carmen Pedraza, Gissele Rodriguez, and Georgina Aguinaga. The Nimitz women's team took fourth, guided by Bailey Johnson. Aldine Davis men took third place overall – led by strong relay teams – while Eisenhower men finished fourth. No matter the school district, failure rates for the first grading period, among those learning virtually, are much higher than failure rates during the same period last year, according to an analysis of data conducted by KPRC 2. After reporting 42% of students enrolled in Houston Independent School District failed at least one course during the first six weeks of the school year, KPRC 2 sent requests to 10 Houston-area school districts for failure rates among virtual students vs in-person students. The founders of a local non-profit think they have the answer -- blending culture into the classroom. Since it’s inception in 2018, Small has been on a mission to make “Reading With A Rapper” much more mainstream. HOUSTON – Two Houston-area school districts handed out school supplies, laptops and hotspots to students in need Wednesday ahead of the start of the 2020-21 school year. Alief ISDThe Alief Independent School District will be the first Houston-area school district to begin its new school year with online learning Thursday. Aldine ISDWith school around the corner, parents in the Aldine School Independent School District got some much-needed help Wednesday. Several volunteers and organizations teamed up to give away free food boxes and school supplies to families in need. Around 4,000 cars wrapped around the school waiting to get the supplies and a box of food from Baker Ripley.

HOUSTON – Thousands of families attended the Aldine ISD Back-to-School Expo. Aldine ISD families were able to pick up free backpacks and school supplies and food donations were provided by BakerRipley. Jennifer Calixto said that she and her family waited in the parking lot since 6:30 a.m.“It’s been very organized, it’s good,” said Calixto. She added, “It is very helpful to the community right now.”Sarah Lowery with the Family and Community and Engagement Department at Aldine ISD said they expect more than 3500 families to attend. “Especially with COVID happening, there are families who may be struggling financially and just need that extra start just to get them going with school supplies.

HOUSTON – Like many school districts in the Houston-area, the Aldine Independent School District is going to begin the school year with virtual learning. In order to meet the needs of students in the district and bridge the digital divide, Aldine ISD officials handed out Chromebooks and hotspots to hundreds of families Monday. The drive-thru distribution event took place at Aldine High School Monday afternoon ahead of the district’s Aug. 17 start date. District officials said more than 5,000 families signed up for the event and each family got one set of devices. With such a high need among students in the district, officials say they will plan a second event to hand out devices to more students.

That includes canceling any activities when distancing isn’t possible and configuring groups of students that always work together. HOUSTON – The Aldine Independent School District unveiled its reopening plans for the upcoming school year. Parents learned more about the changes in a virtual town hall hosted by the district. District administrators tackled those topics, including transportation, technology, and health and safety of students, during Thursday afternoon’s virtual presentation. After that, students will have two options: continue virtual learning or head back to the classroom for in-person instruction. Student Health & SafetyEducators said the health and safety of students is their number one priority.

The presidents of the 10 largest school boards in Texas have come together to write a letter to Gov. “School districts require stability to open without fear of financial losses, and we need flexibility to open school in a manner we determine best for each community,” the letter reads. Secondly, the presidents requested that Abbott allow school districts the flexibility to design instructional systems that meet the needs of families and staff given local health conditions. The board called on Abbott to respond with his decisions by July 17 so that they can better inform their local school districts on the mentioned issues. The presidents of both the Aldine and Houston school boards were among those who signed the letter.

Social DistancingEach Aldine ISD campus has its own unique floor plan and needs. The former Nimitz High School standout signed with the Houston Texans back in April after spending last season with the New York Giants. In his short time being officially back in Houston, Thomas didn't waste any time reaching out to his community. "I just want to say congratulations to all the 2020 seniors who are graduating from high school," Thomas said during the video. HOUSTON – Four students were taken to a hospital after an Aldine ISD bus was involved in a crash in northwest Harris County. According to Aldine ISD, four students had to be transported to Houston Northwest Hospital. Aldine ISD says a driver was maneuvering their vehicle out of a McDonald’s parking lot and a truck struck that car. That car then struck another car and the first car that was struck by the truck hit the bus. Aldine ISD said the school’s principal is at the hospital with the students and parents will be notified.
