KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Ten fans who attended the Kansas City Chiefs game last week have been told to quarantine after one fan tested positive for COVID-19, Kansas City health officials announced Thursday. A person who watched the game from the group's box in Arrowhead Stadium's lower level tested positive the day after the game, the health department said. The health department and Chiefs organization worked together to track down those who had contact with the person. The Chiefs opened the NFL season last week against the Houston Texans with only 22% capacity — about 17,000 fans — at Arrowhead.

A football-starved nation is getting its games back with the start of the NFL season, but many worry that attending games or get-togethers will lead to a new surge in coronavirus infections. Many high schools have started football but states like California and Illinois cancelled the entire season. There have been scattered outbreaks among players, including an entire football team and marching band in a small town in Alabama that had to go into quarantine because of exposure to the virus. A few fans could carry home the virus and spread it to the broader community. Listen, the first game is always that way, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, because you're never quite sure what they're going to do. Even with preseason games, the first few games are up in the air. If we would have had our four normal preseason games then we wouldve seen 25 to 30 snaps of their first group. But the speed of practice never quite matches that of a preseason game, and the speed of a preseason game never quite matches a regular-season one. But without preseason games to work on such fundamentals, the Chiefs had to tweak the way they approached tackling.

When the Texans and Chiefs kick off the NFL season on NBC prime time September 10, (you can watch it on KPRC,) it will be in front of fans. The Chiefs announced Monday they will reduce capacity to about 22% for the home opener, which comes to less than 20,000 fans. If Texans fans are wanting to make the trip, it may be hard to get tickets. Fans are encouraged to wear masks in parking areas as well. The Texans have announced their home opener against the Baltimore Ravens will be held without fans.
