San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced last week he was taking the dramatic step of suing the city’s own school district, which has kept its classrooms closed nearly a year. In the motion filed Thursday in San Francisco Superior Court, Herrera included alarming testimony from hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area, doctors and parents on the emotional and mental harms of extended distance learning. San Francisco’s 52,000 public school students have been out of classes since March. Public health officials have allowed city schools to reopen since September but the district and teachers unions have not been able to finalize a deal on reopening classrooms.

AdThe International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, an umbrella organization of national groups, says the world’s 50 poorest countries have received only 0.1% of the total vaccine doses that have been administered worldwide so far — with 70% administered in the 50 richest countries. The initiative is to begin with 66 national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and others are in talks with their respective governments.

While the vast majority of California’s public schools have been closed since March, San Francisco schools have been allowed to reopen since September. Since the start of the pandemic, San Francisco has been on the cutting edge of COVID-19 restrictions. Newsom sidestepped direct comment on the San Francisco lawsuit, saying everyone is on the same page and wants to reopen schools safely.

(AP Photo/Eric Risberg, File)SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco sued 28 alleged drug dealers who frequent a downtown neighborhood where drug dealing and drug use in broad daylight is common, in an effort to clean up the area that has seen the city's largest number of overdose deaths, authorities announced Thursday. Of the 28 alleged drug dealers named, 27 live outside of San Francisco and come to the Tenderloin from Oakland, Hayward, San Jose, Suisun City and elsewhere, officials said. He said the “commuter drug dealers” acted like “independent contractors,” selling drugs in exchange for housing.
