Many of the homes in Houston’s Freedmen’s Town have stood since the 1920s, embodying the ingenuity and strength of their builders.

In appreciation of Juneteenth, the Houston Rockets and the Toyota Center will hold a company-wide Day of Service at Freedmen’s Town on Friday.

Founded back in 1865, historic Freedmen’s Town located in Houston’s Fourth Ward is the city’s first, and largest Black settlement.

Southwest of Downtown Houston is a close-knit area brimming with African-American heritage.

A historic home in the Freedmen’s Town community is at risk of demolition.

Freedman’s Town at one time had more than 500 homes, today there are only about 40 left.

“If you are a lover of history or even a lover of Houston, you should know that Freedmen’s Town and Fourth Ward have been here since the founding of Houston,” said Zion Escobar, the executive director of Freedmen’s Town Conservancy. As you stroll down Andrews Street, just west of Downtown, you’ll see the slightly red-bricks paved in the streets.
