HOUSTON – HISD Interim Superintendent Dr. Granita Lathan will remain in the interim role. This after the board of trustees voted, 6-3, Thursday to not make her a sole finalist for the job. Earlier in the day the Houston NAACP preemptively sent out a statement also in support of Lathan being named the sole finalist. Vice President Dr. James Dixon cited what he called Lathan’s ability to work with others and provide stability. KPRC 2 received the following statement Friday morning from HISD’s Press Office:“I respect the decision of the HISD Board of Education to resume the search for a superintendent.

HOUSTON – Galveston Independent School District will offer access to rapid COVID-19 tests to symptomatic students and staff. The tests will allow them to test students and staff members at schools with Teen Health Center facilities. There are five Teen Health Center Facilities within Galveston ISD. Brown said the rapid COVID-19 tests are 98% accurate and are available within 15 minutes of taking the test. Rudolph said about 20 rapid COVID-19 tests were performed Thursday.

Humble ISD - Humble ISD schools and buildings are OPEN on Wednesday, Sept. 23, following Tropical Storm Beta. Klein Online students will continue to learn online and Klein On-Campus students will return to their campus. San Jacinto College - San Jacinto College will extend online learning and remote work for Wednesday, Sept. 23. Tomball ISD - Tomball ISD schools and facilities are open Wednesday, Sept. 23 and the district will operate on a normal schedule. Classes continue online.

HOUSTON – Two Houston-area school districts are starting to reveal how they will handle games and crowds at their stadiums and other athletic venues. Galveston ISDIn the era of COVID-19, fans coming to see the first Ball High School football game on Sept. 25 will notice some big changes. Seating capacity in all of the district’s venues will be no more than 25% until further notice. Katy ISDKaty ISD will only allow 50% capacity at its sports venues until future notice. Health & Safety ProtocolsBoth Katy and Galveston ISDs say face coverings are mandatory and they expect spectators to stay six feet away from other groups.

HOUSTON Galveston Independent School District receives a large donation that will help make virtual learning a success. The Moody Foundation provides a $1.9 million grant that will provide more than 3,000 new computers and tech support for students.

Here’s what to know for the upcoming school year:CalendarThe first day of school is scheduled for August 24, 2020. All visitors must wear face coverings when inside a GISD school or building. Schools will consider circumstances for students, staff, visitors with physical, behavioral or health challenges and work to accommodate any limitations. All riders and drivers will wear face coverings while on the bus. Face coverings required.

GALVESTON, Texas – A former school teacher in Galveston County is behind bars for allegedly having an improper relationship with a student. According to Galveston ISD, school officials received a complaint about a district employee and a student on Aug. 28. Galveston ISD said they placed the employee on "administrative leave" on that date and later turned the case over to police because of its "serious nature." Durand was charged with one count of indecency with a child by contact, indecency with a child by exposure and improper relationship between educator and student. The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches also named a Larry Durand "Coach of the Year" for the 2014-2015 year.
