Houston is lucky to be the home of several world-class athletes and that list includes a pair of college students who recently competed in the 2023 Parapan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

It was another busy week of Texas high school football here in Houston.

KINGWOOD - This is not the same Barbers Hill team from a year ago. In fact, it is one that has gone through an entire offseason, summer and now preseason with a chip on its shoulder.

HOUSTON - Inside the Berry Center on Friday night, it was all about the ladies.

Kingwood Park is writing its own history.

HOUSTON – Heading into the season there were more questions than answers around Kingwood Park baseball. "I think this team felt like they were better than the preseason polls or articles were saying," Kingwood Park coach Bruce Cox said. "They are for sure playing with a little chip on their shoulder and they practice that way too. Like mentioned before, King – a UTSA baseball-commit – has the hottest bat in this Panthers lineup. "He's doing what we expected of him and he's having a heck of a season," Cox said.

Kingwood Park is eyeing another deep run in the playoffs as they begin on Thursday. Prior to last season, which was halted due to COVID-19, Kingwood Park girls soccer had made the UIL State Tournament for two-straight seasons and was seeking a third-straight trip to Georgetown. In 2021, Kingwood Park is once again dominated District 20-5A play. The Lady Panthers went a perfect 14-0 and outscored opponents by 57 goals. VYPE traveled out to Kingwood Park a few weeks ago to talk to the Lady Panthers on preparing for another deep playoff run in 2021.

If the season would not have been stopped a year ago, Kingwood Park men's soccer would have been one of the favorites heading into the Class 5A playoffs. Kingwood Park started the season ranked No. This season, Kingwood Park has gone an impressive 18-2-2 (the two losses coming to Bridgeland and Conroe) and have gone 11-0-1 in district play, which has clinched another district crown for the program. The Woodlands is loaded with select, stud athletes led by Marley Krach (Miami) and Samone Knight (West Virginia). Emma Yeager is a force to be reckoned with. In the soccer world she is well-known and what she brings to the pitch for Kingwood Park. If the regular season would have finished, Yeager had a legitimate chance to break the Kingwood Park regular-season mark for goals scored, which is 40 set by Vanessa Valadez in 2013. This season, Yeager, for the 10-1-3 Panthers, has already netted 14 goals giving her 50 for her career. The Kingwood Park girls basketball team made an impressive run this year, wrapping up the season 24-0 after a 58-35 win against Porter. The undefeated squad now heads to the playoffs to face Magnolia in the first round on February 12th. As they prepare for their first playoff game of the season, the Panthers are focusing on a few key aspects of their game. In the history of the school, the Kingwood Park girls basketball squad had never before earned the title outright, so this season meant a lot. Kingwood and Kingwood Park high schools have a special rivalry. Their athletic programs, however, rarely get to compete, as Kingwood is a 6A school and K-Park a 5A school per UIL conference classifications. The men's soccer programs traditionally host a Charity Cup, benefitting the Shriners Hospital for Children Houston. Jennings wished to promote the Shriners Hospital for Children website at www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org for those who would like to learn more about the organization. They hosted a similar charity game annually with their neighboring school, and Jennings wanted to carry on the tradition and introduce it to Kingwood.

An experienced senior group is back, headed by Addison Stevenson, who finished ninth overall with a time of 18:06.58. If Tompkins can push a few more girls into the Top 30 spots, they could contend for a higher team finish. The team finished 13th overall at last year's state meet but do return some experience.
