Just three months after appearing in the 6A Division I State Championship game, the North Shore High School football community faced unspeakable tragedy.

The non-district season is a warm-up (no pun intended) for the games that count, but it sure seemed liked last weekend’s slate was meaningful for those on the fields of play. North Shore first-year head coach Willie Gaston earned his first win in a, 38-17, win over then-No. 3 The Woodlands. The Mustangs’ defense ruled the day, while QB Kaleb Bailey knocked off the rust after an ACL injury a year ago.

Baseball and softball season is back and a little league team in Galena Park got the ultimate field makeover thanks to some big sponsors.

KPRC 2 Sports confirmed that John Kay is stepping down as head coach at North Shore and will begin his college coaching career at Rice University where he will be the new linebackers coach for the Owls program under Head Coach Mike Bloomgren.

The UIL and TAPPS postseason is coming to a point. The TAPPS State Weekend starts Friday, while the Regional Finals for UIL will determine the State’s Final Four.

The Woodlands Highlanders have advanced to the Regional Semis for the first time since 2020 after two blow-out wins over Nimitz and Klein Cain in the opening rounds.

This weekend in Class 6A Houston football started off with a bang as North Shore was challenged by district-mate Atascocita, who put up a huge fight against the state’s No. 1 team on Thursday night.

It is awards season! As area districts see their last playoff teams eliminated, it is then time to release the all-district accolades. District 21-6A released their teams for their girls' squads. North Shore has been a perennial playoff team and that may even be an understatement, to be honest. The Mustangs have made the playoffs for 20 consecutive years, which is crazy. Last season, North Shore went 15-0-5 overall and returned four starters from last year's squad. Hamilton Estrada is another name to remember this year as he has interest already from the University of St. Thomas and Concordia. The Mustangs currently are 6-1-2 overall, 3-0 in district play, according to their MaxPreps, and ranked No.

But we got to the finish line back in mid-January with the Class 5A and 6A State Championships at AT&T Stadium. The lone state champ from Houston came in the form of the Katy Tigers, winning the Class 6A Division II State Championship over Cedar Hill. The Crosby Cougars were the other team to make it to the state title game for the first time in 60 years. So, who were the best of the best in H-Town in 2020? Jalen showed his leadership this season helping along his younger brother and sophomore QB Caleb Koger as well.

Yes, offenses steal the headlines but defenses win championships. It's a tried-and-true formula... see Katy and North Shore, who really rely on defense for winning big over the decades. This season, offenses lit up scoreboards like never before but these elite athletes slowed them down, tackling in space, pressuring the QBs, and picking off balls. For the Greater Houston area, the hopes of bringing home a state championship lies with Crosby, Katy and North Shore. Crosby vs Liberty Hill5A Division II State Semifinal – Friday – 7:30 p.m. – Merrill Green Stadium (Bryan, Texas)Crosby is on a roll. The atmosphere at the game last week was awesome and the week before and even when we played at SFA. That year, Buda Hays reached the 5A Division I State Championship game where they fell to Grapevine. But then late, North Shore pulls away for the victory and punches their ticket to a third-straight state title game.

HOUSTON – When North Shore looks nearly flawless on gameday it's not by mistake. "These kids lift five days a week and they are constantly in the weight room," North Shore coach Jon Kay said. North Shore is in the State Semifinals for a third consecutive season – the last two winning the Class 6A Division I State Championship over Duncanville. The two have become the faces of North Shore football since they were freshmen. North Shore won that 21-14 in overtime inside NRG Stadium for what was then the program's second-ever state title.

HOUSTON - North Shore continues to check off the boxes. North Shore with the win improves to 14-0 overall and advances to its third-straight state semifinal game. Over the past three seasons, North Shore has amassed an overall record of 45-1 and has won 16-straight playoff games dating back to 2018.

In the Houston-area, teams like Fort Bend Marshall, Crosby, Manvel, Clear Falls, Katy, North Shore and Ridge Point are the last teams standing. The Ridge Point Panthers began the year 0-2 with losses to Dickinson and C.E. “That’s where we turned the corner at the bye week,” said senior wide receiver John Paul Richardson, who will play at Oklahoma State next fall. This time around, the Falcons get defending Class 6A State Champion North Shore. North Shore pounced on undefeated Pearland Dawson on Thursday night, racing out to a 24-0 halftime lead and eventual 38-7 victory for the Mustangs. On Christmas Eve day, North Shore (12-0) will face Katy Tompkins (10-0) at Legacy Stadium with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. Last year they reached the State Quarterfinals, where they fell to North Shore in a wild 76-49 game. Westfield won the meeting 42-24 moving on to face the winner of Skyline and back-to-back state runner-up Duncanville next week.

North Shore has become a power in the City of Houston and the State of Texas. The Mustangs would be built up into the power they have become today. North Shore has won back-to-back state titles and three in the last five seasons. The Mustangs seek their third-straight title in 2020 and fifth overall as a program. In-person recruiting came to a screeching halt and the COVID-19 Pandemic has affected everyone. But VYPE has still done what we have always done when it comes to previewing Texas high school football here in Houston. With that said here is the 2020 All-VYPE Public School Team!

This is the toughest district in the state of Texas. Back-to-back State Champion North Shore and perennial playoff powers Atascocita and Beaumont West Brook come together to form a mega-district. The West Brook Bruins are not far removed from playing for a state championship (2018) and return six starters and 28 lettermen off last year's area-round team. The Bruins return District 21-6A Newcomer of the Year Bryce Anderson (LSU), who played both ways last year but will solely play quarterback in 2020. But let's first understand how all this happened as told by North Shore coach Jon Kay. The spring before his sophomore season we went full-speed, Class 6A, North Shore vs North Shore football everyday out there in the stadium. ...ADAM COLEMANThe Houston Chronicle"Dematrius Davis is the most accomplished Texas high school football quarterback since Kyler Murray. If Davis leads North Shore to a third state title, I reserve the right to change me answer." His playoff outing against North Shore was without question one of the all-time great individual performances in Texas high school football history.

We've seen the state championship rings. Now, Galena Park ISD AD Vivian Dancy is happy to unveil North Shore and Galena Park's new-and-improved field turf. VYPE dropped by the #Eastside school as the district stadium was given a face-lift, which will drastically lower the heat coming off the playing surface and have more "give" upon contact. Kudos to Dancy and the GPISD Board for being concerned about their students' safety.

We won't get De La Salle versus North Shore. It was always known that in 2021, North Shore and Shadow Creek would play against each other at Freedom Field. The last two years we got East Side (North Shore) vs West Side (Katy) - which was split. In this meeting, Shadow Creek would try and extend its winning streak to 17-straight and, oh yeah, 32 wins out of the last 33 games played. North Shore would look to improve to the same record 32-1 in its last 33 games played.

When sports came to a screeching halt, school was forced into the home-online version, that didn't keep athletes from getting individual workouts in to stay in shape. Throughout the quarantine, VYPE U Photographer Daniel Alvarez Fedyaev was able to travel out and find some of the area's top returning athletes or guys that are heading to college getting their work in.
