In August, Gov. Greg Abbott signed two laws into effect to help combat street racing. House Bill 1442 and House Bill 2899 enhance the penalties for street racing and provide law enforcement and prosecutors additional tools to address these crimes.

Two people are dead after a deadly crash following an alleged street race in northeast Houston, Houston police said.

HOUSTON – Harris County deputies and other law enforcement arrested more than 100 people in four days on street racing charges, including two mothers they say were racing with kids in the back seat. Angelica Chavez was clocked at 101 miles per hour racing another car in her Dodge Challenger in the middle of the night Thursday, with three kids in the back seat, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. “We were not racing,” Gutierrez told KPRC 2 in a phone call. In fact, Gutierrez said deputies pulled over the drivers of the two other cars alongside her, but not her. “I had no problem going back because we weren’t racing, and I told them that,” she said.
