Greg Abbott and the Texas Division of Emergency Management announced Tuesday the start of a COVID-19 rapid testing program for youth summer camps in Texas. The program is set to help summer camps that are licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services conduct rapid tests of staff and campers during the summer. Through this program, TDEM will provide participating summer camps with COVID-19 rapid antigen tests that will be administered to staff and campers who volunteer to participate. “The COVID-19 Testing Program for Texas Youth Summer Camps will help camps safely operate throughout the summer by quickly identifying positive COVID-19 cases among campers and staff. I encourage qualifying summer camps to apply for this program so that we can continue to keep Texans safe from this virus.”AdYouth summer camps that are licensed by DSHS and wish to participate in the program can apply here.

If you’re still looking for a summer camp or two to fill your child’s days this summer, you’re in luck. There are still some spaces open. Many families uncertain about the safety of sending kids to camp waited later to register their children this year. When Gov. Greg Abbott opened all businesses to 100% capacity in early March, it allowed camps to start planning.

The Astros have kicked off their Summer Camp, a.k.a. Astros Manager Dusty Baker said he couldt get into details, but many speculate he could be one with the virus. More members of the organization have tested positiveLast week, the Astros sent a release saying a player in the organization had tested positive, but that that player was not in Houston. Summer camp might not be an option this year, but YouTube has created a free #CampYouTube, so as to re-create common camp experiences through YouTube videos. These include arts and crafts, sports, writing workshops, photography tutorials, mental health exercises, exploring the outdoors and SO much more — seriously, there are about 1,200 videos in total. Any interest in learning how to make a ping pong ball float? Plus, YouTube uses resources for its videos from partners like the BBC, Imagination Library, Code.org, Breakthrough Junior Challenge, Google Arts and Culture, National Geographic Society, Sesame Street and others. “These resources are not meant to replace homework assigned by teachers, but meant to complement that work,” YouTube states on its camp website.

HOUSTON – While Texas summer camps and daycare centers are back open for business, there are some important questions you need to ask before deciding whether to send your kids to one. Patrick Quinlan of Kingwood is sending his 4-year-old daughter, Hazel, to a day camp at Kids in Action. “It’s pretty much the same kids which really helps minimize the spread as well,” said Diane Havens of Kids in Action. “So it’s not different kids every day, it’s the same kids, same teachers, same classrooms.”Those are all key things parents should look for. Another thing parents should ask is if the toys and other items kids touch each day are sanitized between uses.

HOUSTON – Summer camps will be allowed to reopen soon after Gov. The YMCA of Greater Houston’s summer camps will soon be allowed to open but they will not look like they did every year before this. The thing that won’t be different is the joy and excitement and enthusiasm that the kids are going to have for the good program that’s happening,” said Stephen Ives, the President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Houston. Summer camps can open on May 31, according to the state’s guidelines. In the video above, see what steps the YMCA of Greater Houston will be taking to protect your kids.

HOUSTON – As Texas reopens, many parents are still waiting to find out if summer camps will be allowed to open. The program has 30 campsites around Houston that host several thousand children from 3 to 18 years old every summer. “I believe that camps are going to operate in smaller groups,” President Mike McDonell explained. Like at a lot of other camps, some parents have already paid in full. Every camp is different, but most camps are still in limbo waiting to find out if the state will let them open this summer.

HOUSTON – A year-round camp in Washington County is changing the way people with special needs experience camp. Camp For All is a 206-acre campus in Burton that specializes in activities for disabled children and adults without any barriers, said President and CEO Pat Sorrells. Sorrells said the camp splits the $1,000 per person cost in half with its 65 community partners. “Campers come here and discover what they can do as opposed to out in the real world what they can’t do.
