These eight beaches were chosen because they typically draw a lot of traffic and have presented crowding issues in the past, officials said. Authorities will be enforcing social distancing rules while patrolling the beaches, officials said. An aerial advertising campaign is also being used to remind beachgoers of the rules.

The man was reported missing at 1 p.m. after he disappeared near the west seawall on Galveston Island, officials said. Police said the kayaker is a Hispanic man who was last seen in a green kayak, and wearing camouflage waders and a life jacket. U.S. Coast Guard said they spotted him floating in the water two miles off the coast of Sunny Beach. They said a helicopter was used to pull him out.
