Ask 2: When is the Telephone Road Bridge opening?

Update on Lawndale and Telephone bridges over Brays Bayou

HOUSTON – Question: When is the Telephone Road bridge opening?

Answer: The Lawndale Bridge was completed last spring and the work lasted about a year. Crews had to demolish the bridge and replaced it with a higher, longer, and wider bridge and features extended 10-foot sidewalks. This increased the capacity of the channel, allowing for more flood waters to flow throughout Brays Bayou.

The Telephone Road Bridge is substantially complete as of January. Workers just have to finish up some minor punch list items. It will officially be marked complete in February, so drivers will continue to see minor closures in the area.

Most recently, community leaders got together for an official ribbon cutting for the recently completed Buffalo Speedway bridge over Brays Bayou Wednesday, January 26. The approximately $9.6 million bridge construction project demolished and replaced the previous bridge with a higher, longer, and wider bridge. The bridge and accompanying channel improvements will increase the channel’s capacity, allowing for more floodwaters to flow throughout Brays Bayou.

All of this work is part of the $480 million Brays Bayou Federal Flood Damage Reduction Project, known as Project Brays, that involves widening 21 miles of the bayou and replacing or modifying 32 bridges to substantially reduce the risk of flooding for more than 15,000 structures.
