A Frank farewell to my buddy Bill

Anchor, Away!

Bill Balleza forever on the wall of The Palm Restaurant

Few newsmen understand Houston like Bill Balleza does. You, literally, have to live it for 50 years (as Bill would say, “Is this a math problem?”).

Television journalism offers a front-row seat to history -- the good and bad history. Whether it’s the turbulence of the 70s, the fortunes made and lost in the 80s or the victories of the 90s to a truly changing world in so many ways in this century, Bill has watched and reported all of it with empathy and wisdom saturated in his soul. He has enjoyed that front-row seat and taken us along with him night after night. He has lived it best which is why he tells it best.

Many of us honored Bill at the Palm Restaurant last night where his shining smile will forever beam. I am lucky enough to have seen that smile on and off the television airwaves for 25 years and to benefit from his wisdom, his humor and his friendship. Here are some pics from our personal and professional moments. I look forward to many more dinners and laughs with the retired Bill!
