HOUSTON – As we say goodbye to a rainy July in Houston we turn our attention towards August, which begins on Thursday!
Typically, August is the warmest month of the year in Houston, but we will start to see some relief by the end of the month! Our average high temperature drops to 93° by the end of the month, with our average low dropping to 74°. Although it’s still warm, this is 2° cooler than the start of the month.
One thing that surprises a lot of folks is that we start to see a significant loss of daylight in August. This is easily seen through our sunset times. Although we’ve been enjoying 8 p.m. (or later) sunsets since early May, starting Aug. 17 our sunsets are in the 7 p.m. hour.
By the end of the month our sunset is at 7:44 p.m.! That’s nearly 30 minutes earlier than what we have right now.
If you are into astronomy, the Perseid meteor shower peaks from August 10-13! The best time to see the meteor shower would be between midnight and sunrise.
Make sure you step away from city lights and give your eyes enough time to adjust to the darkness. Our full moon in August falls on the 19th this year. The August full moon is called the Sturgeon Moon.
Our weather pattern is shifting to a hot conditions. The CPC (Climate Prediction Center) is expecting all of Texas to be above average in temperatures for the month. Areas in West Texas are forecast to be well above average.
As for rainfall, the CPC still has SE Texas marked for above average precipitation. This is likely because we will start to see our typical summertime sea breeze showers in August. Climatologically we also expect the tropics to get active, but right now we aren’t tracking any tropical trouble for Houston.
Have an amazing August!
