HOUSTON – I think we can all agree, it’s hot in Houston. But thanks to a heat dome, it’s even hotter this week, as a high-pressure system pushes hot air down, and traps it, which pushes temperatures up- “feels like” temperatures are expected to climb to 107+ this week.

As the temperatures continue to rise - it’s important that we not only recognize the warning signs of dehydration and heat stroke but how to stay hydrated as the sun continues to heat up this summer.

So what should you drink and eat to help stay healthy and hydrated this summer? We spoke to Catherine Kruppa, a registered dietitian to get answers. According to Kruppa, the answer starts with water.

Drinking water throughout the day promotes BETTER:

  • Hydration
  • Sleep
  • Digestion
  • Energy levels

So how much water should we drink?

Aim to drink ½ of your body weight in fluid ounces of hydrating fluid (decaffeinated and non-alcoholic) daily. There are plenty of times to have fluids in a busy schedule. Try thinking of your hydration times as small “pauses” throughout your day to help you pause, relax, and take care of yourself.

And when?

  • When you wake up! Give your body a chance to wake up independently sans coffee. Drink a glass of lemon with water first thing in the morning.
  • Drink fluids with breakfast and lunch. Bonus points if you drink another water prior to lunch time!
  • Try swapping out your afternoon coffee break with a bottle of water.
  • IF you commute and do not want to get caught in traffic needing a bathroom break try drinking another water bottle around 3 pm, so you have enough time to use the bathroom before you leave for rush hour traffic.
  • Have another glass of water when you arrive home or at dinnertime.
  • Drink more fluids before you start your bedtime routine or with your bedtime routine.

What about food? What foods will help you stay hydrated in this Texas heat?

Watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, peaches, oranges, cucumber and lettuce are not only good for you - but help you stay hydrated too!
