HOUSTON – It’s back-to-school time in Texas, which means school lunches, new backpacks, and as always in August intense heat for our children.
This is climatologically the hottest time of the year, and unfortunately it’s also when there will be a bunch of little feet on the sidewalks. Did you know the sidewalk actually makes it even hotter? Check out our pavement predicament here.
Today’s heat advisory has been extended for tomorrow. It starts Tuesday at noon and lasts through 7pm.
Forecast high temperatures through SE Texas is expected to reach the mid-to-upper 90s. If you see a shower (20% chance) you could get a brief cool down, but most will stay dry.
As if the high temperatures weren’t hot enough... when you factor in the humidity it will feel about 10° warmer. The highest heat index values are expected to top 108° at the heat of the day.
Check out our current heat index below:
The best way to protect your children from the heat is to prepare.
Make sure they are hydrated and drinking plenty of water before they are even exposed to the heat (pre-hydrating). Dress them in loose fitting, light colored, light-weight clothing. Encourage them to listen to their bodies and take breaks if they need to.
There is no heat relief in the 10-day forecast. Daily highs will be in the upper-90s with lows in the lower-80s. Please be careful and prepare your children for the scorching temperatures.
Stay safe out there!
