As Seen on TV: Debbie Meyer Green Boxes

HOUSTON – Wasting food that goes bad before your family eats it is a waste of money; but the maker of one product claims it'll keep your food fresher longer.

Consumer expert Amy Davis put it to the test for "As Seen on TV Tuesday."

Debbie Meyer claims anything you put in her Green Boxes, from baked goods to fruit and vegetables, will last longer than when it's stored in a regular storage container. To test that claim, we put bread, strawberries and sliced watermelon in three disposable plastic food storage containers and in three Debbie Meyer Green boxes. We marked each box with the date we filled them and waited.

In the commercial  for the product, Meyer shows limp and moldy carrots.

"These carrots are your money in the trash," she says. "But these carrots stored in my ultra light green boxes are still fresh at 21 days."

After 15 days, we checked the watermelon. The melon in the regular container was still firm and crunchy; but the watermelon in the green box actually appeared a little mushy and slimy.

Twelve days after we packed the strawberries, we found mold growing on the berries in the Green box, but none on the berries in the regular container. The bread in both containers was soft with no mold after 12 days.

We bought the Debbie Meyer Green Boxes at Bed, Bath & Beyond for $19.99 for a set of 32.

Meyer claims her boxes are "made from food-grade polypropylene and a unique, proprietary combination of food-safe, natural substances" that "help preserve freshness and extend the life of produce and baked goods." Unfortunately, we did not see a difference in the Green boxes over regular disposable storage containers.
