Houstonians burn calories instead of turkeys on Thanksgiving

HOUSTON – There's the Turkey Trot and then there's the Turkey Burn.

Burpees, side climbers, lunges, it's everything you hate but the participants of the first ever Turkey Burn at Memorial City Mall have a shared motivation.

“Alright, how many of you are actually out here this morning so that way you can really eat thanksgiving dinner? That's what I thought,” KPRC reporter Chip Brewster said to cheers.

Among the respondents was Patrick Darby, who adds, “My motivation to come out today was to match the intensity of how I'm going to eat this evening.”

This free boot camp, put on by Memorial City Club, was in part designed by its director, Joseph Jindra.

“We wanted some high-intensity interval training… a lot of moving… just a good mix of different jumping,” Jindra said.

At the end of the 45-minute Turkey Burn, butts were kicked.

“I've trained for a lot of different things and that was up there,” Darby said.

However, delicious dishes were on people's minds.

When asked what they were going to eat tonight several of the participants responded with such answers as: “Turkey, sweet potatoes,” “brisket and green bean casserole,” “stuffing,” “a lot of empanadas,” “pumpkin pie, the whole pie.”
