HOUSTON – When you're one of the most popular breweries in Houston, you're allowed an occasional #humblebrag on social media. That's exactly what 8th Wonder Brewery did in a well-deserved post on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter this week.

In the post, 8th Wonder announced that it won a prestigious award at the 2017 U.S. Open Beer Championship. It entered its Weisstheimer in the German Hefeweizen category, and the popular brew came out on top.

The brewery wrote: "We are ecstatic to announce that Weisstheimer won a GOLD MEDAL in the German Hefeweizen category in the 2017 U.S. Open Beer Championship!"

The Weisstheimer Hefewiezen is a "well balanced brew with prominent aromas of banana and clove imparted by the yeast," according to 8th Wonder's website.

The name itself is a nod to Houston: a combination of Westheimer Road with weissbier, a kind of German wheat beer.

The traditional German Hefeweizen is seasonal. The 8th Wonder website says the Weisstheimer is available May through September. It made its commercial debut last fall at the brewery's Achtoberfest event.

The U.S. Open Beer Championship is based out of Oxford, Ohio. According to its website, breweries from Vermont to Vietnam sent in more than 6,000 beers representing over 100 different styles for the competition. It included professional breweries and award-winning home-brewers. The judges were from England, Canada and the United States. The complete winner’s list can be found at U.S. Open Winners List.

We are ecstatic to announce that Weisstheimer won a GOLD MEDAL 🥇 in the German Hefeweizen category in the 2017 U.S. Open Beer Championship! usopenbeer.com. #8thWonder
