Woman makes Whataburger run for mother during Houston area flooding

Mikayla Marie Coyle

KATY, Texas – Here's a flood-related story that will make you smile.

Mikayla Marie Coyle, 20, said her mother, Debbie Coyle, was stuck at work after her night shift as a nurse at Heritage Park of Katy. She volunteered for a double shift because they were short staffed due to the weather.

"I knew my mom would be working a lot, so I wanted to do something nice for her."

Mikayla decided to go out and get her some food, so she and her boyfriend drove to a Whataburger in the flood. They drove back as far as they could without going too deep into the high water, then got out and walked through knee-deep water about three blocks to Heritage Park to deliver the food to her mother.

"She started crying. She was so excited about it," Mikayla said.

Mikayla sent KPRC 2 a photo of herself holding her mother's order. We shared it and tweeted it to Whataburger with the caption:

"This flood isn't going to stop this girl from a @Whataburger run. #houstonflood #kprc2"

Whataburger replied to the tweet:

"Hope y'all are staying safe out there. Looks like someone is happy to have that Whataburger."

There have been many comments addressing whether or not Mikayla should have driven through the flood waters just to get Whataburger. She said she and her boyfriend made sure not to drive too far into the high water, that's why they got out to walk when they did.

"I wouldn't have gone through the water if it wasn't safe," Mikayla said.
