HOUSTON – After an unsuccessful run for Houston mayor, former Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia is seeking another political office.
Garcia filed paperwork Monday to run for Congress and challenge Gene Green for the seat in the 29th Congressional District, according to Harris County Democratic Party chairman Lane Lewis. The primary election will be held in March 2016.
Garcia resigned his post in May to run for mayor in last month's election. Garcia didn't finish with enough votes for the mayoral runoff election, which was won by Sylvester Turner.
Garcia is a 23-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, former head of the Anti-Gang Taskforce, a former City Council member, former mayor pro-tem and former sheriff of Harris County.
After leaving the Houston Police Department, Garcia served six years as a Houston city councilman, eventually becoming mayor pro-tem under Mayor Bill White, which gave him the experience on how the government works.
Created in 1992, the 29th Congressional District covers mostly east Houston, including Galena Park and South Houston, as well as parts of north Houston. Green has served the district since its creation.
