Claughton Middle School to remain closed Thurs., Friday because of fire

The district says classes will resume on Monday

HARRIS COUNTY – A fire in the kitchen of Spring ISD middle school has a canceled classes for students for the rest of the week.

The fire broke out just after 12 a.m. Wednesday at Claughton Middle School on Spears Road.

Officials said the fire itself was put out quickly, but smoke filled much of the school.

The fire is under investigation, but firefighters said they believe it was the result of an electrical issue.  It was originally reported that hot dog buns too close to a piece of kitchen equipment started the fire.

Spring ISD cancelled classes on Wednesday, with the hopes of reopening on Thursday; but an email from the district late Wednesday afternoon said the school would remain closed through the rest of the week.

A statement from Spring ISD spokesperson Karen Garrison read in part:

"The decision has been made to close school at Claughton Thursday, Oct. 24 and Friday, Oct. 25 so the building can be thoroughly cleaned. Even with crews of 250 or more working around the clock, we will not be able to use the building any sooner than Monday, Oct. 28. Ensuring that the building is safe for students and staff is extremely important to us."

While classes will resume on Monday, the district says outdoor athletic practices and competitions will go on as scheduled for the remainder of the week.

Spring ISD says students involved in those activities will receive a phone call with more information from their coaches.

Parents will continue to received updates from the district by phone or email.

Anyone with questions or concerns should call the campus at 281-891-7950.
