HOUSTON – One by one, the Harris County Precinct 1 constable’s office, along with the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, removed 101 dogs and four cats Thursday afternoon. That was in addition to the 17 dogs that were removed yesterday. The animals were removed from a home and a warehouse on Schumacher Land Lane at Chimney Rock Road.
Rick Aaron said he picked up strays from the neighbor, took them home and they quickly multiplied. Aaron said, "They're well-cared for, well-fed, There were just too many of them. They bred so fast."
"By looking at the animals, it would appear that he didn't care about the animals, as far as I'm concerned,” said Constable Alan Rosen. He added, "The dogs were in very bad shape. Some had parvo and smelled horribly inside the residence. We are working with the SPCA to seize all of the animals and file animal cruelty charges against the individual who was keeping the animals."
Constable Rosen said people in the neighborhood complained. He said the dogs and cats were headed to the SPCA where they would be nursed back to health and could be adopted. He said investigators would present each animal’s case to prosecutors, individually, for animal cruelty charges.
Rosen confirmed eviction proceedings were underway and the eviction would be completed as early as June1, which is when the case is expected in court. The property owner told KPRC 2 that the tenant has asked for more time, making promise after promise.
Nearby business owner Tramell Kukoyi said it’s time for the resident and the animals to go. She said, "He won't go. She leased me the warehouse in the back and I can't even run my business. I have a business up there and I have a business in the back and I'm afraid. I have trucks and stuff. I can't run my business. And I've got to wait until June 1 for squatter's rights."
