HOUSTON – Nintendo is discontinuing its wildly popular NES Classic this month, but according to some in the gaming community, another classic edition is reportedly on the way for the holiday season.
Nintendo of America released a statement this week that said NES Classic is on its way out: “Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year.”

If you didn't manage to get an NES Classic, the company left the door open for a potential return. The “for this year” part of Nintendo's statement has some wondering whether the system will return to stores after this year, because of its popularity.
“We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize,” the company said. “We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”
News of the discontinued system came amid more discussion over whether other classic products, such as the mini Super Nintendo Entertainment System, could be on tap for the holiday season.
Eurogamer, citing sources "close to the company," wrote: "Nintendo will follow up its smash-hit NES microconsole with a mini version of the SNES."
