MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas – The storms that came barreling through the Houston area and its suburbs this week are making people who live near the West Fork of the San Jacinto River nervous. The river is expected to crest late Wednesday night.
Some in the River Plantation subdivision chose to evacuate their homes before the water reached them.
"We already got the pet out. We had one dog, she's out. I'm going to get what I can out right now and get out of here," said resident Cole Leonard.
Others are preparing for high water to make it into their homes.
"People who live in two story houses in the lower sections down here, make sure they get their stuff up to the second floor, if possible," said Constable Gene DeForest of Montgomery County Constable Precinct 2.
Nearly 10 inches of rain has fallen in the neighborhood in the past three days, pushing the San Jacinto water levels up to its banks and flooding most of the golf course at the River Plantation Country Club.
"Yes, it's pretty bad. It's a lot of rain, a lot of water coming down Lake Creek," said resident James Irwin
The water on some of the roads is between 6 and 7 feet deep.
The Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center warns that flood waters can be extremely dangerous or deadly.
"We need to take this real serious," said DeForest. "We are saturated with water here. It's been raining for over a week now."
Constables patrolled the area on Wednesday, warning residents to stay away from flooded roads and asking them to keep track of the weather conditions in case the flooding gets worse.
